Tapescript records your voice and turns it into text. This page says exactly what is kept, where it goes, who else sees it and how to get rid of it. It is written to be read, not to be impressive.
The short version. To write a note down, Tapescript sends your recording over an encrypted connection to our servers, which pass it to Google's Gemini models and send the transcript and summary back to your iPhone. Our servers never store the audio. The transcript and summary wait on our servers only until your iPhone collects them, and are deleted then, or after 7 days if it never does. Beyond that they keep only counts of how much you have used. There are no accounts: your notes are files kept in your own iCloud, under your Apple Account, or only on your iPhone if iCloud is off. The few things your iPhone does itself are listed below. Deleting a note deletes it for real. What is sent to Gemini is not used to train Google's models, and we do not train AI models on your recordings either.
Who we are
Tapescript is made by Devjoy Ltd, a company registered in the United Kingdom ("we", "us"). For anything about this policy or your data, write to kwill@devjoy.agency. Devjoy Ltd is the data controller for the personal data described here.
What Tapescript collects
| Your notes | The audio you record or import, the transcript, the title, the summary, its key points and action items. These are stored as files in your own iCloud Drive, under your Apple Account, or only on your iPhone if iCloud is off for Tapescript. We cannot read the copy in your iCloud. The recording and its text do pass through our servers and Google's while they are being written down, as described below. The audio is not stored by us; the finished text is held only until your iPhone collects it. |
|---|---|
| No account | Tapescript has no accounts. There is no sign-up and no sign-in, so no name, email address, or Apple or Google identifier is tied to your notes. There is nothing to sign out of. |
| Install ID | The app creates a random identifier for this install and keeps it in your iPhone's Keychain. It survives deleting and reinstalling the app, and it does not move to a new iPhone. It is used to check your subscription and to count your usage, and our servers hold it only as a one-way hash. It is not tied to a name or an email address. |
| Settings | Your settings, such as the language you record in and whether you want an alert when a note is ready, kept on your iPhone. |
| Subscription status | If you subscribe to Tapescript Pro, whether the subscription is active and when it renews. Apple handles the payment; we never see your card. |
| Usage analytics | Which screens are opened and which features are used — for example that a recording started, or that a summary was written — with an anonymous app identifier, app version, device model and iOS version. Never the content of your notes. |
| Usage counters | How many seconds of audio were transcribed for you, how many recordings you have made, and how many summaries you asked for. For each note, how many seconds have already been counted, so that a retry isn't counted twice. These are filed under one-way hashes of your install ID and of the note's ID. Nothing about what the notes said. |
| Notification token | If you allow notifications, the token Apple gives the app for them is sent with each recording, so our servers can tell you when its note is ready. It is deleted with that note's record on our servers. |
| Feedback you send | If you use "Send feedback" or answer the in-app question, we store what you wrote, the score you gave and the email address you chose to leave. It is sent to both PostHog and Firebase (Google Analytics for Firebase), the two analytics services listed below. |
| Diagnostics | Crash reports and error logs, so failures can be found and fixed. |
What stays on your iPhone
Transcripts and summaries are written in the cloud, so this list is short. These are the things your iPhone does itself.
- Recording. The recording is made and saved on your iPhone. If there is no connection when you stop, it waits there and is sent to be written down when your iPhone is back online.
- Search. Searching your notes runs on your iPhone.
- Exports and playback. PDF and plain-text exports are made on your iPhone, and playback happens there too.
With iCloud on, your notes are kept in your own iCloud, which is what brings them back on a new or replacement iPhone signed in to the same Apple Account. With iCloud off for Tapescript, they stay only on this iPhone: lose the phone and they go with it. Turn iCloud on later and they move into it automatically. Recordings are also kept on the iPhone that made them.
What goes to the cloud, and when
- Your own iCloud. When iCloud is on for Tapescript, your notes, recordings and settings are stored there by Apple, under your Apple Account. That is Apple's service between you and Apple; we have no access to it.
- Your recordings. When you stop recording, or import or share an audio or video file, the audio is sent over an encrypted connection to our servers (Google Firebase Cloud Functions, in the United States). They hand it to Google's Gemini models, on Google Cloud, to write the transcript and then the summary: the title, a short summary, key points and action items. Each part of the recording is written down as it arrives and the audio is discarded. The finished note waits on our servers until your iPhone collects it and is deleted then; one your iPhone never collects is deleted after 7 days. For a video, only the sound is sent. A long recording is sent in parts.
- Nothing is kept for long. Our servers never store the audio, and hold a transcript and summary only until your iPhone collects them, 7 days at most. They keep only the usage counters above and a daily total of what the service spent. Under Google Cloud's terms, what is sent to Gemini is not used to train Google's models.
Who processes your data
| Apple | Payments, delivery of the app, iCloud (where your notes are kept if iCloud is on) and App Attest, which confirms a request comes from the genuine app. |
|---|---|
| Google Firebase | Runs our servers (Cloud Functions, in the United States), which pass your audio through without storing it and hold a finished note only until your iPhone collects it, plus the "note ready" notification, crash reporting, app analytics (including the feedback you send) and remote settings. Your notes are not stored in Firebase. |
| Google Cloud (Gemini) | Google's Gemini models, on Google Cloud's Vertex AI, write the transcripts and summaries. Audio and text are sent to be processed. They are not stored by us, and they are not used to train Google's models. |
| PostHog | Product analytics and the in-app feedback question, hosted in the European Union. |
| RevenueCat | Keeps track of whether a Tapescript Pro subscription is active, against the anonymous install ID. Receives a purchase identifier, not your payment details. |
We do not sell your data, and we do not share it with advertisers. These providers act on our instructions and are bound by their own agreements with us.
How long it is kept
- Notes are kept in your own iCloud, or on your iPhone, until you delete them. Cancelling a subscription doesn't touch them.
- Deleted notes sit in Recently Deleted for 30 days so you can change your mind, then the app deletes them permanently: the note, its transcript and its recording.
- All your notes go when you choose "Delete all notes" in Settings: every note, transcript and recording, from your iPhone and from iCloud. This cannot be undone. There is no account to delete; if you have a subscription, it is cancelled in the App Store.
- Recordings sent to be written down are never stored by our servers. The finished transcript and summary are deleted once your iPhone collects them, or after 7 days.
- Analytics events are kept for up to 12 months.
Your rights
Under UK and EU data protection law you can ask for a copy of your data, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it. Most of this is in the app already, because your notes are kept in your own iCloud or on your iPhone and not on our servers: every note can be exported from the share menu, and "Delete all notes" removes them from your iPhone and iCloud. For anything else, write to kwill@devjoy.agency and we will answer within 30 days. If you are unhappy with our answer you can complain to the UK Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
We process your data to provide the app you asked for (performance of a contract), and, for analytics and crash reports, on the basis of our legitimate interest in knowing whether the app works. Those analytics carry no note content, and no name or email address unless you chose to leave one with your feedback — only an anonymous identifier for this install. If you would rather they were not kept, write to kwill@devjoy.agency and we will delete what has been recorded for it.
Children
Tapescript is not intended for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect data from them. There is no account to delete: a child's notes are deleted in the app, with "Delete all notes" in Settings. If you need help, write to us.
Security
Your notes are kept in your own iCloud, which Apple encrypts in transit and at rest; with Advanced Data Protection turned on, it is end-to-end encrypted. Your recording and its text travel to our servers over an encrypted connection; our servers never store the recording and hold the text only until your iPhone collects it. Every request to our servers must come from the genuine app, verified with Apple's App Attest. No system is perfect, and we will tell you if something happens that affects you.
Changes
If this policy changes in a way that matters, we will say so in the app before the change takes effect. The date at the top always reflects the current version.
