A customer interview, written up
In this example Rosa, who runs two cafés, talks for 24 minutes about staff schedules. The summary puts the useful part first: about five hours a week lost to rotas, and what she would pay to get them back.
Underneath: send Rosa the prototype next week, add her quotes to the research board. The two things you said you’d do.
Customer Interview: Café Owner
Rosa runs two cafés and spends about five hours a week on staff schedules. She’d pay for a tool that handles shift swaps, but wants it to work from her phone.
Key points
- Scheduling takes about five hours a week across two locations.
- Shift swaps happen over group chat and get lost.
- She would pay up to $30 a month if it saves real time.
- A phone-first app matters more than a desktop one.
Find the quote, hear it again
Search for the word you remember and the note opens to it. Tap the line in the transcript and you hear how it was said, which matters before you put it in quotation marks.

One voice, then another
The transcript doesn’t label speakers yet. In a two-person interview that’s rarely a problem: your questions are short and theirs are the long answers. Say their name and the date at the start so the note carries both.
Customer Interview: Café Owner
- Thanks for making time, Rosa. Tell me about scheduling at your cafés.
- Honestly, it eats about five hours a week.
- If something saved me that time, I’d pay thirty a month, easily.
- But it has to work on my phone. I’m never at a desk.
Before you press record
- Ask on the recording. “Is it OK if I record this?” and their yes, at the top of the transcript.
- A quiet room. Cafés are the worst place for an interview about cafés.
- Phone between you. Closer to them than to you; they do most of the talking.
The longer version: how to transcribe an interview.
Questions people ask
How do I transcribe an interview on my iPhone?
Record it with Tapescript, or import a recording you already have from Files or another app. The transcript, with the time of every line, arrives in the note with a summary.
Can I transcribe an interview I recorded somewhere else?
Yes. Import the audio or video file in the app, or share it to Tapescript from another app. Video files are fine; only the sound is used.
Does it label the interviewer and the interviewee?
Not yet. The transcript is one stream of text with times.
What happens to the interview audio?
It goes over an encrypted connection to our servers to be written down, and each part is discarded once it’s done. We never store the recording. The note lives in your own iCloud.
